Unfortunately, the locomotives we had come to see (two of which are pictured, above and two below) were not running so we headed for Union Mills, IN.
This former Elgin Joliet & Eastern SDM was sitting at Union Mills having just been shut down. The unit was rebuilt from an SD9 by the previous and original owner, sister railroad Duluth Missabe & Iron Range.
Next up was a Chesapeake & Indiana train which we caught at two locations in the Hanna, IN area (above and two below).
We learned from another railfan that a train was approaching and we headed out to meet it. The train had a locomotive on each end.
After working the NS interchange on the south side of town the train arrived in "downtown" with three box cars. The covered hopper originally in the train was interchanged to NS.
We moved on to Elkhart, IN, where we would spend the next two nights. The New York Central Museum has this E8 in its collection.
