Railfan trip to PA, OH, IN and MI, 8-9 to 8-20-2021 - 5

Hi, The plan for Friday the 13th of August was to photograph the Chesapeake & Indiana so we began our day in LaCrosse, IN.

Unfortunately, the locomotives we had come to see (two of which are pictured, above and two below) were not running so we headed for Union Mills, IN.

This former Elgin Joliet & Eastern SDM was sitting at Union Mills having just been shut down. The unit was rebuilt from an SD9 by the previous and original owner, sister railroad Duluth Missabe & Iron Range.

Next up was a Chesapeake & Indiana train which we caught at two locations in the Hanna, IN area (above and two below).

As the train paused here to do some switching we decide to move on to the Elkhart & Western.

Argos, IN was our first stop. Here we found a GP 16.

We learned from another railfan that a train was approaching and we headed out to meet it. The train had a locomotive on each end.

After working the NS interchange on the south side of town the train arrived in "downtown" with three box cars. The covered hopper originally in the train was interchanged to NS.

We chased the train north (above and below).

At Plymouth, IN the line crossed the Chicago, Fort Wayne & Eastern (above and below).

We moved on to Elkhart, IN, where we would spend the next two nights. The New York Central Museum has this E8 in its collection.

The NS mainline from the east coast to Chicago passes through Elkhart and there is a major yard west of the Amtrak Station. In the above photo a tank train with UP power heads east past the station.
