Almost as soon as we arrived in Michigan City we spotted a freight train moving west. However, we thought there was no way we could get into position to photograph it. So we continued west through town planning to stop at the Amtrak station to see if we there was a posted timetable. We came to a grade crossing with the gates down. In a minute or two the train came along with these two SD38s for power so we decided to try for a couple of shots (above Michigan City, IN and below Beverly Shores, IN). The South Shore has two more SD38s, 154 and 155. I don't know how they are painted.
West of Beverly Shores it seemed chasing would not be possible as the freight was accelerating. Also, based on the little bit of information we had I thought the morning Wolverine train to Chicago was due so we set up at the diamond where the South Shore crosses Amtrak (former Michigan Central).
Next we went to the South Shore shops on the east side of Michigan City. There were a number of G38s just sitting, including the second unit in the above photo. Eventually some workers showed up and started to move locomotives around.
While we there a passenger train arrived from Chicago and discharged its passengers. It is shown here headed for a lay up track to await its next run to Chicago.
In the course of moving locomotives the special unit was spotted in front of the passenger platform in perfect sunlight (above and below).
A crew eventually took four light engines west allowing for this side by side portrait. We did not follow this light engine move as the lead unit was running long hoof forward.
There were a number of CSX trains three views of which are shown here (above and two below). This eastbound has just hit the diamond.
