Trip to Chicago - Day 7

Hi, Dale and I started home on Labor Day. We figured we had time for a little railfanning in the morning and that the South Shore would have some trains.

We stopped at the Gary Airport station and, after a short wait, a westbound train arrived.

Next we moved to East Chicago, IN where, much to our surprise, we encountered this IHB switcher working the north end of the yard just south of the Arcelor Mital steel mill.

Our final location was Michigan City.  We caught a westbound in the street and

then headed for Shops.  A couple of GP38s were sitting just west of the station (above and below).

We assumed this would be the next train west but it was not scheduled for awhile.

However, while we were considering what to do next a crew went to work.  They boarded these two GP38s and headed west light engine (above and three below).

Thanks for looking.
