Washington, DC and Viscinity - 5

Hi, This is the final group of slide scans from the Washington, DC area. This group starts at Virginia Tower, the point where the passenger line from Washington Union Station joins the freight by pass around Union Station.   Most, if not all, of the photos were taken in the 1970s.

The 2 trains pictured below will take the freight by pass.  The locomotives are former PRR E-44s.

The Southern Crescent, shown below will arrive shortly at Washington Union Station where the diesels will be exchanged for electric power.

The GG-1 powered freight is about to cross Long Bridge from Washington, DC into Virginia where it will terminate at the RF&P's Potomac Yard.

Here the northbound Southern Crescent has just crossed the Potomac River on Long Bridge.

I am not sure whether this train is the Piedmont or an unnamed train.  The location is the west end of Long Bridge.

Being in Alexandria, VA for the Southern Railway steam trips frequently provided an opportunity to photograph freights in the area.  Here 2 RF&P freights,

and the Southern Crescent are approaching Alexandria Union Station.

A southbound Southern Railway train has halted at Alexandria Union Station to board passengers.  The train will pickup a string of TOFC cars in about a mile at Van Dorn St.

The Duke Street overpass offered a great place to photograph this southbound Southern Railway freight passing through Alexandria Union Station.

I hope you enjoyed the photos.
