September 2014 Railfan Trip - 5

Hi, Tuesday, October 16 turned out to be a travel day.  Having spent the night in Dodge City we faced a 4 to 5 hour drive to put us in position for our next day which would start on the Arkansas-Oklahoma in Shawnee, OK.

Our first stop was in Avard, OK where the former Frisco line from Springfield, MO joins the Transcon.  Two or three different crews were working on track projects.  One westbound got by us here as it just popped on us and we did not have time to set up.  After looking around and not finding a shot that intrigued us we made a detour move south to Waynoka in the hopes of finding fast food for lunch.

All that we could find were a couple of sit down restaurants.  We chose a Mexican/American restaurant in the depot and had really good burgers.  Dale did not join us and got both a westbound and an eastbound while we wait.  The downsides of these decisions: service was slow and our detour was about 1/2 hour each way.

After lunch we headed east along the Avard Connection.  A westbound surprised us at Carmen but 3 of us were able to get a photo.

The manifest had a DPU.

While we were sitting at Goltry hoping for another westbound we heard an eastbound blowing and so quickly moved to get the train coming past the elevator in town.

Because trains move slowly through Enid (there is a crossing with the UP just west of the BNSF yard on the east side of town) we were able to photograph the eastbound again as crews changed.

Also, in the yard was this set of local power.  It was good to see a matched set of older, standard cab units.  There are a number of really large elevators in Enid.

Just east of Enid I spotted this train in the distance.  We immediately investigated and found it waiting for a new crew.  This provided the opportunity for numerous angles and focal lengths (above and 4 below).

Thanks for looking.
